FURTHER INFORMATION:
EU Horizon 2020 funding for Research, Development an Innovation– SME Instrument Overview
SMEs are an important component of the EU’s HORIZON 2020 Research, Development and Innovation funding and are thus seen as a foundation stone for Europe 2020’s vision for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. 99% of all European business are SMEs and 85% of net new jobs in the EU between 2002 and 2010 were created by small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs).
Horizon 2020 supports Innovative Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) through a new funding instrument (or mechanism) especially dedicated to SMEs.
The aim of the SME Instrument is to fill the gaps found in early-stage funding for research and innovation focused SMEs, Specifically the funding is intended to
– Serve as an accelerator for the introduction to market of promising technological (& non technological) innovations
– Support the development of a compelling commercial proposition
– Be for organizations who are at a stage where a prototype of the innovation can be deployed in market
– Be also applicable to single companies
Projects will be selected through a bottom-up approach within the given ‘Societal Challenges’ or ‘Enabling Technology’ themes of Horizon 2020. Projects must be of clear interest and benefit to SMEs, and have a clear European dimension.
The SME Instrument has 2 funding streams which are relevant to cleantech and tech SME’s with close to €80m funding available for allocation across Europe for these 2 streams over the course of 2014. The two streams focus on;

1. Stimulating the innovation potential of SME’s of a low carbon and efficient energy system
2. Open Disruptive Innovation (ODI) Scheme

Follow up Seminar Dublin
Following on from interest generated in the Webinar, Inspiralia will look to running a smaller more focused seminar as well as one to one meetings in Dublin on the 23th of June 2014. This will enable SMEs with specific projects to get a deeper insight in to the process and facilitate the scheduling of one to one meeting with SME’s to discuss project specific plans,
